Lake Gibson rallies in 4th quarter to stun Vanguard

By

OCALA — Lake Gibson made the plays at the end to break Vanguard’s heart in Class 6A, Region 2 final on Friday night at Booster Stadium. The Braves (12-0) scored two touchdowns in the final 5:39 of the fourth quarter to overcome a 13-point deficit and pick up a 14-13 win over the Knights.

Lake Gibson tied the game on a 26-yard scoring strike on a 4th-and-19 play with 2:31 left from Kevaris Thomas to M.J. Link, which came on a post pass to the middle past a pair of Vanguard defenders.

From there, Nick Lutz, who booted the game winning field goal with no time on the clock to knock out Seffner Armwood the previous week, calmly split the uprights for the go-ahead extra point.

Vanguard, who held a 202-27 edge in total offense in the first half, but didn’t manage a first down in the fourth quarter, was then picked off on its first play of the ensuing drive, as Joshua Hayes swiped a pass in the middle.

Lake Gibson then ran off the final 2:21 to advance to the state semifinals on the road at Navarre on Friday night.

“Our kids never stop believing and they never panic,” Braves coach Doug DeMyer said. “They compete all of the time. It goes back to practice where we have competition drills. They battle hard all of the time. I am so proud of them.”

Thomas, who was sacked nine times by a stout Vanguard pass rush, was dropped the play before the game by Vanguard’s Tye Farmer, made a nice pass to Link, who made a break to the inside to get free from a Vanguard defender.

The winning score was set up by Vanguard’s fifth turnover of the game, a fumble that was recovered by Lake Gibson at the 30-yard line.

“We made too many mistakes,” Vanguard coach Edwin Farmer said. “You can’t make that many mistakes and beat a team like Lake Gibson.”
